This painting is a double portrait of a stylishly dressed couple. By the way they’re dressed you can tell they’re wealthy, and that they have high social status. You can also tell they’re married by their proximity to each other. The focus of the painting however seems to be the woman because the artist placed her in the foreground; which makes her more preeminent in the painting. The fact that her skin complexion is very light, and her dress colors are lighter compared to the dark coat worn by her husband, attracts the viewers’ eyes directly to face. Her face is the brightest spot in the painting therefore you can’t help but looking directly at her. As a viewer as feel no connection to her because she’s not looking directly at me; she seems to focus on an imaginary point somewhere off frame. But I doubt she’s consciously looking at anything. I feel more connected to her husband in the mid-ground. Because like her husband, I’d love to figure out what makes her so sad. I’d love to know what thoughts are troubling her so deeply…
